This one is just like the Moon Landing Hoax Conspiracy. But I know it's not a hoax. You want to know why I don't believe that Robert Peary faked his discovery of the North Pole.
Because it was his assistant Matthew Henson who was the first one to get to the North Pole and he was black, hours ahead of Peary, and Peary was angry about that.
Why would he fake it and then tell everyone that the black guy got there ahead of him? Henson could go 200 miles and gauge his distance within 20 miles. He was in the lead alone, ahead by a few hours, and overshot by a couple of miles and stopped and backtracked. Peary called for them to make camp, when they met up, Henson graciously said Peary was only 50 meters behind. Peary made measurements the next morning and realized they had reached the North Pole.
If he was going to fake the discovery, why not just tell Henson that they were a few miles short of the mark and that he'd go on ahead and Henson could follow? Then he could say he had been literally the first man to set foot on the North Pole. Instead he left camp for the return journey without even waking Henson up, was depressed when he returned and was estranged from Henson for the rest of their lives.
People speculate on Peary's depression. He must have failed on his one last attempt and had to fake it. No, he made it and was depressed after his success because the black man inadvertently beat him out in the sprint to the finish. Not that it makes a difference. Peary had no toes. It's not like he didn't get the credit in the end but there were a lot of debunkers crying hoax. I too jumped on the hoax and conspiracy bandwagon until I thought about it. Photographic analysis of the shadows in the discovery photos also supports the discovery. But the black man first scenario is clearly the coups de gras for Peary at the Pole debunkers.
